5 reasons why you need to watch Blood Father (2016)

Looking to watch you’re next action film?

The simple answer is Blood Father. Its Gibson, guns and pure genius.

Whilst, we’re waiting for cinemas to re-open, you can still find good material to watch from the comfort of your home.

In this article, we go over 5 reasons why you need to see Mel Gibson’s Blood Father (2016). Lets get straight into it

Plot: An ex-con (Mel Gibson) reunites with his estranged wayward 17-year old daughter to protect her from drug dealers who are trying to kill her.

That’s all you need to know.

5) Critics love it!

Its quite strange to see an action film get good reviews nowadays, but Blood Father scored an awesome 89% on rotten tomatoes. That’s more fresh than well made dramas. Its true that most critics loved this film and its for good reasons.

But, the greatest incentive to watch a film is a high scoring rotten tomatoes rating. You know the film is special if its scored in the 80’s region.

Other fine film critics such as Marc Kermode have also praised the film.

4) Mel Gibson is back

Gibson really is back.

When it comes to action, Mel Gibson has a lot of experience. More experience than most action stars today. From Lethal Weapon, Mad Max to Braveheart, he has done it all. Yet, this film is a combination of hard hitting drama with old school action.

All of the action sequences have a purpose to the story.

An overlooked complaint of so many action films are that the action exists primarily for spectacle pleasures, but that’s not enough to entertain audiences now a days.

We need substance alongside the thrilling spectacle.

Mel Gibson gives a very powerful performance. What works so well about his character is that he is very believable as this father figure trying to clean up his alcoholic centered past. The theme in this case is redemption.

His redemption begins with his love for his daughter.

His performance is a combination of some of his previous work, yet this is one of the most realistic performances audiences have seen from him in recent years.

One of the greatest action legends of our generation, performing hard hitting drama. What more can I say?

3) Story

The story here is what separates this feature from most action flicks. A lot of action films nowadays are cold because the story is basically non existent. This film has a very simple story, but its has thematic importance.

The story has heart, drama and redemption. How often do you see these qualities in a modern day action film?

Many action films make the mistake of showing audiences the action first, then the story second. Blood Father takes the time to develop these characters, which sets the scene.

When the action happens, it doesn’t let off. The last act is nothing but thrilling and fun.

2) Direction

Every good action film needs to have a good director. The director in this case is Jean-Francois Richet who has quite an impressive resume and is a hit amongst the critics.

He knows how to tell a good story and directs the action very well. His track record is reliable and I am sure he will make more films like this in the future.

The director isn’t a typically Hollywood director, he comes with an unique set of skills and knows how to tell a realistic story.

You may roll your eyes on a few occasions, but the direction is consistent throughout. The action is never stylized like some of Michael Bay’s work. It’s refreshing to see action done right.

1) 1 hour 30 min Runtime

The amount of times where I’ve seen an action film that has dragged and over stayed it welcome is far too many to count. The awesome factor about Blood Father is that it is paced perfectly.

The runtime doesn’t exceed 1 hour 30 minutes. They tell the story from beginning to end and gives the audience no extra material. There is no part of the story that you feel could be cut out.

Its a straight to the point action flick with heart and dramatic weight. The runtime doesn’t exceed 2 hours. I’d say the runtime makes for a perfect Saturday night experience.

Streaming

Here comes the important part. Where can you find the film?

You can find it on Itunes and Amazon Prime.
